PRF (Platelet Rich Fibrin)

Platelet rich fibrin (PRF) is a new twist on an old theme.

Many people have heard of PRP, or platelet rich plasma, and PRF is the new PRP. Both are all natural substances, rich in your own growth factors, that stimulate the growth of collagen. With both PRP and PRF, blood is drawn, spun down in a centrifuge, and the remaining fluid is injected where you most need collagen rejuvenation.

Collagen gives structural support to tissue such as skin, joints, and bones. As you age collagen production slows. This, along with the loss of elastin, leads to signs of aging such as sagging skin, dry skin and wrinkles.

While PRP is great, PRF is like a supercharged version of PRP. First, it’s more concentrated. Instead of drawing 8 milliliters of blood and getting 4 milliliters of watery serum, we draw 13 milliliters of blood and get 1.5- 2 milliliters of concentrated serum. Also, since PRF has no additives, it forms a clot once it is injected. That means that it’s almost like a growth factor “bomb” under the skin to make your body create collagen.

Benefits

  • It can be injected anywhere without limitation. This includes the under eyes, around the mouth, lips, eyebrows, scalp (to stimulate hair growth), neck, and anywhere else in the body.
  • There are no additives- what you get comes from your own body. That also means that there are no allergic reactions.
  • It’s low risk. While there is a risk of blocking a blood vessel or causing injury, this problem is very rare. This same risk is present in the injection of other facial fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane.

Ideal Candidate

  • Anyone who wants safe and natural collagen growth and rejuvenation.
  • PRF is especially great for the under eye and “lip lines” areas. At MeiRai we have a unique procedure that combines PRF and RF microneedling for specifically for under eye and lip areas.

What to Expect

  • Make sure you are well hydrated on the day of the procedure. Hydration will make for an easier blood draw and an overall superior PRF product.
  • We will draw two or more vials of blood, depending on how much PRF you want.
  • Since there are no additives, there is very little pain.
  • Bruising and swelling at the injection site are common, depending on the area being injected. For instance the delicate under eye area typically has more swelling and takes longer to recover.
  • We recommend performing PRF in a series of two or three treatments for best results. It can also be combined with other collagen stimulating procedures (RF microneedling, micro focused ultrasound (Ultherapy), Erbium YAG laser, PDO threads) for even better results.
  • Combining PRF with fillers is a great treatment plan because the fillers can provide volume and rejuvenation while you wait for the PRF to stimulate new collagen growth.
