Microneedling

MICRONEEDLING

What is microneedling?

Great results, combined with little downtime, has made microneedling one of today’s most popular facial rejuvenation procedures.  Microscopic punctures are made in the skin with a pen-like device that has very short, fine needles. These tiny punctures stimulate the body’s natural wound healing process, reversing and preventing signs of aging by increasing cell turnover, collagen, and elastin production.

At MeiRai, we are proud to offer the first ever FDA approved microneedling pen, the SkinPen from Bellus Medical. Most other microneedling devices are difficult to clean, which can lead to cross contamination and infection. The SkinPen, however, uses disposable tips, which provides a new, sanitary experience for each patient. The needle punctures are also incredibly accurate. This allows the least amount of damage to the skin with the most optimal results.

After just one procedure, skin will appear visibly brighter, smoother and more youthful-looking.  A series of treatments will reduce fine lines, crow’s feet, deep wrinkles, and sun damage.  Acne scaring typically shows dramatic improvement after a series of treatments.

Microneedling can treat and improve the following areas:

  • Skin texture
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Large pores
  • Fine lines
  • Deeper wrinkles
  • Stretch marks
  • Pigmentation issues
  • Scarring from an accident or surgery
  • Acne scarring
  • Crepey skin on the arms and knees

Facial microneedling takes about one hour, and treatment can be extended into the neck and décolletage area. Scar and stretch mark repair takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the size.

All microneedling at MeiRai is followed by an application of ZO Growth Factor or one of ZO’s Brightening serums.

Combined Procedures

Microneedling + PRF

Microneedling with PRF boosts the effects of standard microneedling and can help you to more rapidly achieve your desired results. The combined procedures can be performed in one hour.

This treatment can take from 30 minutes to one hour.  Both time and price are subject to patient need and the desired area of treatment.

FAQs About Microneedling

What does the procedure involve? – Your skin is first cleansed and then a topical numbing cream is applied for approximately 25 minutes. The numbing cream is removed, and the area is prepped and degreased with an antiseptic. A collagen stimulating product like hyaluronic acid serum or PRP is applied and a small pen with 12 tiny needles glides over the skin creating tiny wounds. The speed and depth of the treatment is adjustable and will be tailored to your specific skin needs. Depending on the area treated, the procedure can last approximately 15-30 minutes plus the 25-minute numbing time.

Is there any prior preparation needed? – To ensure the best results, prepping the skin at least 4 weeks prior to your procedure with a vitamin A or growth factor product is highly recommended.

Can microneedling be performed on all skin types and tones? – Utilizing the skin’s natural healing process with no harsh chemicals or lasers, microneedling is safe and effective for all skin types. A personalized consultation will be given to ensure the procedure is right for you.

Is it painful? – A numbing cream is applied prior to the procedure to increase comfort.

What will I look like after the treatment? – There is little to no downtime following a microneedling treatment. The most common reaction is redness (similar in appearance to a light sunburn) that can last approximately 24-48 hours. As part of the skin’s healing process, you may also notice increased dryness, itching, peeling, bruising, and irritation for a few days. These effects can be lessened with the use of approved skincare products.

Are there any risks? – As with any cosmetic procedure there are risks; however, they are rare. The most severe risks associated with microneedling are infection and/or an allergic reaction to topical products used during treatment.

How often should I get the treatment? – You will see benefits of microneedling after the first treatment; however, for best results it is recommended to get 3 treatments with a minimum of 4-6 weeks in between. Maximal results will be seen in 3-6 months.

FAQs About PRP

What is PRP? – PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. Whole blood is comprised of plasma, red, and white blood cells, and platelets. Whole blood is spun in a centrifuge to gain an increased concentration of platelets suspended in a small amount of the plasma. Platelets are a natural source of growth and clotting factors that play a critical role in tissue repair and regeneration.

What is microneedling with PRP, and how does it work? – In a traditional microneedling treatment, a hyaluronic acid serum is applied during the procedure to lubricate the skin and to provide nourishing benefits as it seeps into the microchannels created by the pen. In microneedling with PRP, PRP is utilized in place of the hyaluronic acid serum. Microneedling with PRP uses the power of your own blood to rejuvenate skin and increase cellular turnover. PRP helps boost the results of collagen and elastin production and increases the speed of healing (less down time).
